Idea Napkin- 11A

1.)    I am Jordan Jacobs, a Freshman General Studies Business major from Tampa, FL. I aspire to work in hospital administration, and I care about the satisfaction of every person with the good or service they receive. I have worked in customer service and by doing so learned to solve issues and improve overall quality. I want to serve others and make changes that can influence and improve their lives. By leading this business, I would be able to provide a product that improves customer satisfaction for businesses every day.  This would be a fulfilling career that I fully enjoy and feel passionate about which is something I look forward to.

2.)    I am offering a product that would be marketed to businesses as an alternative to paper straws. This would meet the unmet need of businesses’ ability to satisfy customers after the implementation of a plastic straw ban. Customers who purchase from me will be able to follow regulation without using paper straws which patrons to their establishment find terrible. This would benefit my customer by improving their popularity and customer satisfaction.

3.)    I am focusing on the main group of establishments that serve straws; however the product is available for purchase to any individual. Businesses included in my focused market are specifically establishments that serve drinks which use straws. Even more narrow of a market would be straw serving establishments in cities where plastic straws were banned from use. Even more specialized would be establishments where the drinks served cannot be consumed without a straw, such as a milkshake or a slushee. The other group which I am not focusing on but is still a potential customer for my product would be the every day individual consumer of straws. If unhappy with the straws being used, they have the option to purchase and provide their own straws. This is not the most convenient options to users, thus they are not my target audience.

4.)    I think that since the plastic straw band was implemented, customers have been dissatisfied with the way that paper straws deteriorate and cause a bad taste. This dissatisfaction is consistently voiced to the individuals who serve the paper straws to patrons, so I believe that businesses are fully aware of the need for a better substitute. They will spend money on my product because it would make them more successful and popular with their customers. I fully believe that businesses who value customer satisfaction as a priority will budget for and invest in a better substitute than paper straws.

5.)    While there are other paper straw substitutes most are high and price and not single use. As far as I know, bamboo straws are not currently produced in high enough quantities to make them an option for large scale businesses. My persistence and commitment to solve this problem and satisfy business patrons is what sets me apart. I do not have connections with production or development agencies, but I do know owners of several businesses that I feel would purchase this product.

Evaluation:
Because I have full commitment to improving customer satisfaction and the drive to see this project through, the success of the venture is quite high. My solution has no competitors with the same idea. It also is a unique solution as it is single use, durable, and follows the no plastic straw regulations. These all blend well together and are strong aspect. However, my weakest “link” would have to be the fact that I do not have any connections in the production field and would struggle to physically make the product I am trying to sell. I think that with the right connections and determination, this business idea can be extremely successful in plastic straw free cities.

  1. Hi Jordan,

I think that you did a good job explaining who you are, what your expectations for the future are, and also what is the product that you are offering to your customers. I particularly enjoyed reading about who are you mainly directing your product to and why they should decide to pay for your product. Finally, I think that you did a great job evaluating why a bamboo straw is a great and unique product, and also talking about the weaker parts of your business opportunity. Great job!

    Sincerely,

  2. Hey Jordan,
I think you paired your skills with the business really well. I think you did a really job of analyzing who would want to buy your product in why; however, I think you are underestimating your competition. Although many people complain about paper straws, I would assume that bamboo would be much more expensive. I do not know if the public outcry against paper straws is enough to warrant some restaurants turning to a more expensive alternative. What do you think?

  3. Hey Jordan,
I really like your mindset when it comes to customer satisfaction since its sure to build a good reputation for your product. Being compassionate about helping others is certainly a good still to have that will set you and your product apart. Furthermore, I think you have a very solid plan in place and your marketing segment also seems to have a lot of potential. Restaurants in cities where plastic straws are banned are sure to jump at the opportunity at a clean, high quality substitutes like bamboo straws. Overall you did a great job defining your product's target market, weak points, and reason for the need.
    Best regards,
    Samuel Ackenine

  4. Hi Jordan,
I feel like I understood who you are and what your skills and aspirations are well. You explained each and every one of your bullet points thoroughly and in detail. I think that your business idea is a great idea since there has been a lot of bad reviews for paper straws, so I would be curious to see and use your alternative to them. I also liked how well you were aware of the negative elements to your business concept. Great job!
    All the best,
    Luis

26A ·         This semester I did not necessarily fail a class or an exam but a goal I had set for myself. I had promised myself that I would not fall behind in my online classes and be scrambling for exams like I did last semester. By coming to ENT in person and watching my elective livestreamed I was mostly on top of it until my social schedule and sorority friends limited me from watching the 5 hours of economics lectures that were assigned every week. By the time spring break had finished I had over 30 hours of lectures that I needed to catch up on in 1 week for the upcoming exam. I feel like I had failed myself and fallen back into bad habits that led to my unsatisfactory grade last semester. ·         I learned that while a busy social schedule is fun and good for your happiness, choosing to put social or sorority life above your goals and the time required for your classes is never the correct ch...

14A- Halfway Reflection

14A- 1.       Tenacity is a competency:   In order to keep up with this course I have created an pre-deadline for myself to ensure all my assignments are completed before the due date and a high quality. Developing this habit has allowed me to manage my time more accurately and not turn in lackluster work. Because this class requires some outside of the library interaction, looking at assignments the week before they are due is now a behavior I have tried to implement this in the past few weeks when the assignments required interviews, which are not possible in the library at 2 am when you’re trying to beat a deadline. In order to be successful in ENT you must interact with other people and do so in a timely manner. 2.       Tenacity is also about attitude: When I was extremely a couple of weeks ago I put off all of my ENT homework because it is usually the last thing due for the week. By doing this however, I found myse...

29A 1.       Opportunity ·         New environmental protection movements have brought to light how environmentally damaging plastic is to our ecosystems, especially our oceans. The single use plastics are the greatest under fire because they are disposed of in great numbers and do not decompose, thus leaving trash to pollute the oceans and lands. ·         After a video emerged of a sea turtle having a straw stuck in its nostril, the push to stop the use of plastic straws was born. It began with the policy of not giving out straws unless asked, then to straw-less cups, and finally some cities have completely banned the distribution of plastic straws by restaurants and other straw serving establishments. With this came the implementation of paper straws in every restaurant, coffee shop, bar, and gas station. Paper straws were simply awful. They disintegrate in your drink and become l...
