8A- Solving the Problem
  • The product I have come up with is in regards to the ban of plastic straws in the city of Gainesville. Specifically at places which replaced the plastic straws with paper versions, hey are an insufficient substitute.  
  • While there are some reusable straw options the majority of them are hard to clean or not convenient for everyday use. I would like to create a product which is both useable for the everyday person and falls within the restrictions of Gainesville’s new legislature. 
  • I have come up with 2 solutions to this issue:
    • First, bamboo straws would be a better solution. While more expensive a bamboo option would be more durable than the typical paper straw that is being used and is not harmful to the environment. This would be a better option than paper straws with a smaller increase in price.
    • Glass straws that are used, sanitized, and reused. This option would be for high end restaurants which have the facilities and manpower to reuse straws just as they do silverware and linens. While the initial cost would be high, after some time restaurants would not even need to purchase straws other than to replace broken units. 
  • I want a product that is both affordable and durable that can practically be used everyday. The paper straws are simply just not a suitable replacement. 
  • The product would be sold to bars and restaurants as well as any other institution that currently uses paper straws because of government regulations. I believe that most businesses will purchase this because they all are aware that the majority of customers are unhappy with the current use of paper straws.

    Hi Jordan,

    I also agree that neither paper straws (which I believe are horrible) and current reusable options are a definitive way to substitute plastic straws going forward. I agree that bamboo straws can be a viable substitute that is both environmentally friendly and that does not increase the cost substantially. I also agree that glass straws can be a viable options that is durable. Although glass straws will have a higher entry cost, replacements would not be needed in the short term. This option although not well-suited for every location could very well be adopted by high-end restaurants and locations as you pointed. Good job also identifying your market and why they should buy your new products.

    Hey Jordan,
    Although I have never tried bamboo straws I think it is a really good idea. One one hand, I think they will not dissolve like paper straws, and on the other, I think they will be good for the environment. While I agree that they can be expensive, I think that even if you are able to sell to some nicer, franchise-type places like Chick-fil-a, your market and user base will grow. I really hate paper straws and would love to see a new, legal option enter the market. Good luck!

14A- 1.       Tenacity is a competency:   In order to keep up with this course I have created an pre-deadline for myself to ensure all my assignments are completed before the due date and a high quality. Developing this habit has allowed me to manage my time more accurately and not turn in lackluster work. Because this class requires some outside of the library interaction, looking at assignments the week before they are due is now a behavior I have tried to implement this in the past few weeks when the assignments required interviews, which are not possible in the library at 2 am when you’re trying to beat a deadline.
