12A- Figuring out Buyer Behavior

Choosing a Segment:
For this assignment I chose the segment of customers who live in areas where plastic straws are banned, care about the environmental impact of disposable plastic, and frequent establishments which serve inadequate substitutes to plastic straws (paper etc.).
Interviews:
·        College student who has tried to implement sustainable practices in her life.
·        Mother of 2 who watched the sea turtle video and cried as the straw was pulled from its nose.
·        A young adult who just moved to the area and hates paper straws for their quality yet hates plastic straws because of their pollution.
What I Learned:
I learned in these interviews that the demand for this product will be low if not correctly marketed. When I first explained the product only 1/3 interviewees understood what it actually was. The young man new to the area was the only one to instantly say he would purchase bamboo straws and bring them to an establishment to avoid a paper counterpart. Both the mother and the college student assumed this was simply another version of a reusable straw (like silicone or metal) that are already popular. When I asked if they would be open to using the straw at a price higher than plastic, 2/3 said yes. The only one that abstained from committing to using this solution is the mother, as she said that her children do not care and she does notice, yet is not bothered enough to pay more. But the other two interviewees both responded as I expected this segment of people to. They were willing to pay a little bit more to avoid the gross paper straw and still not affect the environment. The college student had even heard of bamboo straws, but none have been produced in such a way that they are thin enough to be single use and cost efficient.
When asking them about their search, the younger interviewees said they looked for “durable straws” while the mother simply said that she went online to look for “reusable cups with straw”. I know that the college student discusses this with her friends as she is a member of climate action gators, and they love having a straw-free Gainesville, yet some have not been impressed with the substitute. She said she would probably mention this to her climate club.

Describing the Segment:
This segment is highly aware of their need. Anyone who lives in Gainesville and dislikes the taste of paper in their water is aware of this need. Specifically this segment narrows it down to people who would not go buy plastic straws because they do not agree with the pollution they create, which means they are a group who truly care about what they are using and will look for solutions. This brings me to search, 2/3 interviewees were looking for a solution to THIS problem while the other simply ignored and adapted the issue, so it did not affect her. I think that this could be a big draw to individuals who specifically are looking to find a durable, single use, environmentally friendly straw.

  1. Hey Jordan,
Right off the bat, I really liked how specific the criterion was for your target segment. You're sure to get good interviews that way and that was really showcased by your findings. I found it quite interesting that people regarded your alternative, bamboo straws, as just another substitute for plastic. At the same time though, not many people may know about the benefits and differences until they actually try it themselves, so it does make sense to an extent. Therefore, just as you stated, the most important thing you can take away from your findings is that the marketing of your product is gonna play a key role in how successful it sells and how distinguished it is from other alternatives. All in all, I think you did a great job with your interviews.

26A ·         This semester I did not necessarily fail a class or an exam but a goal I had set for myself. I had promised myself that I would not fall behind in my online classes and be scrambling for exams like I did last semester. By coming to ENT in person and watching my elective livestreamed I was mostly on top of it until my social schedule and sorority friends limited me from watching the 5 hours of economics lectures that were assigned every week. By the time spring break had finished I had over 30 hours of lectures that I needed to catch up on in 1 week for the upcoming exam. I feel like I had failed myself and fallen back into bad habits that led to my unsatisfactory grade last semester. ·         I learned that while a busy social schedule is fun and good for your happiness, choosing to put social or sorority life above your goals and the time required for your classes is never the correct ch...

14A- Halfway Reflection

14A- 1.       Tenacity is a competency:   In order to keep up with this course I have created an pre-deadline for myself to ensure all my assignments are completed before the due date and a high quality. Developing this habit has allowed me to manage my time more accurately and not turn in lackluster work. Because this class requires some outside of the library interaction, looking at assignments the week before they are due is now a behavior I have tried to implement this in the past few weeks when the assignments required interviews, which are not possible in the library at 2 am when you’re trying to beat a deadline. In order to be successful in ENT you must interact with other people and do so in a timely manner. 2.       Tenacity is also about attitude: When I was extremely a couple of weeks ago I put off all of my ENT homework because it is usually the last thing due for the week. By doing this however, I found myse...

29A 1.       Opportunity ·         New environmental protection movements have brought to light how environmentally damaging plastic is to our ecosystems, especially our oceans. The single use plastics are the greatest under fire because they are disposed of in great numbers and do not decompose, thus leaving trash to pollute the oceans and lands. ·         After a video emerged of a sea turtle having a straw stuck in its nostril, the push to stop the use of plastic straws was born. It began with the policy of not giving out straws unless asked, then to straw-less cups, and finally some cities have completely banned the distribution of plastic straws by restaurants and other straw serving establishments. With this came the implementation of paper straws in every restaurant, coffee shop, bar, and gas station. Paper straws were simply awful. They disintegrate in your drink and become l...
