Entrepreneurship Story

One time I was exposed to Entrepreneurship was this fall after joining my sorority. As a member of almost all panhellenic chapters, meal plans are included in dues and two meals a day are supplied at you chapter’s house. During the first exam week of the semester  a large number of sisters found themselves missing lunches and dinners because they were in exam reviews and studying. A sister who had a lighter schedule and a vehicle created a delivery service where other sisters paid to have their meals served into Tupperware and brought to their apartment or dorm or left in the community fridge at the house. This took little to no money to start and was simply a commitment of time she had a surplus of. It solved an issue that by specifically targeting the small group of individuals with the issue and was able to do so at a price point that the customers were easily willing to pay.
I joined this class not because I want to be an entrepreneur myself, but  rather because I would like to understand how other successful entrepreneurs formulate and solve the problems they are targeting. The amount of money that these famous entrepreneurs make by being the first to solve a large scale problem is astonishing to me. Learning this process would allow me to not necessarily mimic it but understand the opportunity.

  1. Hey Jordan,
That seems like a really cool idea. I know a lot of friends that are in sororities struggle to make it to every meal because of their busy schedules. Having an option that lets them save the meals they miss as leftovers would definitely lighten the financial burden of having a meal plan. I can sympathize with your reasoning of joining this class. While I do not anticipate starting my own business venture, I hope to learn about the basic functions of a business and how they are started.

  2. Hey Jordan!
I think that your sister is very clever and that she made the best of a great opportunity. I am in a fraternity and I definitely feel the struggle of not being able to make it to the house on time. That being said, I would surely use a service like your friends if it was available, all around a great idea. Furthermore, I really like your reasoning for joining the class. With that sort of attitude, you're sure to pick up a lot from the course and maybe take you one step closer to being an entrepreneur.

  3. Hi Jordan,
As a former busboy at a sorority house on campus, I have seen the problem you described firsthand. The girls would often come and ask me where their late plate was while I was cleaning up post-meals. They were often frustrated when I would tell them they were all gone or that there was no food leftover. As a college student, I understand how this can be bothersome because food is quite expensive and it is difficult to be spending money on it when there are meals you are missing out on but have already paid for. I personally never saw this problem as a business opportunity but I would commend your sister on her presence of mind to do something that would not only help out her friends, but also earn a profit herself. This is a very cool idea!

26A ·         This semester I did not necessarily fail a class or an exam but a goal I had set for myself. I had promised myself that I would not fall behind in my online classes and be scrambling for exams like I did last semester. By coming to ENT in person and watching my elective livestreamed I was mostly on top of it until my social schedule and sorority friends limited me from watching the 5 hours of economics lectures that were assigned every week. By the time spring break had finished I had over 30 hours of lectures that I needed to catch up on in 1 week for the upcoming exam. I feel like I had failed myself and fallen back into bad habits that led to my unsatisfactory grade last semester. ·         I learned that while a busy social schedule is fun and good for your happiness, choosing to put social or sorority life above your goals and the time required for your classes is never the correct ch...

14A- Halfway Reflection

14A- 1.       Tenacity is a competency:   In order to keep up with this course I have created an pre-deadline for myself to ensure all my assignments are completed before the due date and a high quality. Developing this habit has allowed me to manage my time more accurately and not turn in lackluster work. Because this class requires some outside of the library interaction, looking at assignments the week before they are due is now a behavior I have tried to implement this in the past few weeks when the assignments required interviews, which are not possible in the library at 2 am when you’re trying to beat a deadline. In order to be successful in ENT you must interact with other people and do so in a timely manner. 2.       Tenacity is also about attitude: When I was extremely a couple of weeks ago I put off all of my ENT homework because it is usually the last thing due for the week. By doing this however, I found myse...

29A 1.       Opportunity ·         New environmental protection movements have brought to light how environmentally damaging plastic is to our ecosystems, especially our oceans. The single use plastics are the greatest under fire because they are disposed of in great numbers and do not decompose, thus leaving trash to pollute the oceans and lands. ·         After a video emerged of a sea turtle having a straw stuck in its nostril, the push to stop the use of plastic straws was born. It began with the policy of not giving out straws unless asked, then to straw-less cups, and finally some cities have completely banned the distribution of plastic straws by restaurants and other straw serving establishments. With this came the implementation of paper straws in every restaurant, coffee shop, bar, and gas station. Paper straws were simply awful. They disintegrate in your drink and become l...
