5A- Identifying Local Opportunities

5A- Identifying Local Opportunities

·        “Commission to decide rezoning request Tuesday” by Michael O’Hearn of the Time-Georgian

o   This story written of January 30th, 2020 explains how a state patrol station is being demolished. Essentially the main point of the article is that since the building was left vacant it serves no purpose.

o   The main problem presented in this story is that the station went from being the busiest post in the area to completely abandoned in about three years. The vacancy left the building to fall into despair as no one was responsible for the upkeep after the office was relocated. It was described as being in “deplorable conditions” and the situation was even brought before the county commissioners to be fixed.

o   The people who have this problem are the residents of the area who must live near the building is bad shape, the county commissioners who must solve the problem, the owners of the property who have to pay for the cleanup, and the company who is responsible for renovating the property.

·        “Most of Holman prison closing” by Melissa Brown and Brian Lyman of the Montgomery Advisor

o   Essentially, an older less updated prison in Alabama is closing due to safety concerns such as the housing areas for electric, water, and sewer systems being damaged.

o   The problem is that because the prison is closing, current inmates must be transferred and other areas that will close at later phase must be renovated to house inmates that are not being transferred. Over 600 inmates from Holman prison are being shuffled to other facilities in the state which both adds more crowding to those institutions and inconveniences the employees in charge of the transfer.

o   The people that have the largest problem are the inmates themselves as several of them are serving life sentences and were expecting to die in Holman. Other individuals being affected by this closing are all the employees who work at the prison, as there isn’t another similar facility near-by that they can transfer employment to. A final person affected would be the lower security inmates families who now must travel for possibly hours to visit their loved ones.

·        “Tas force warns against illegal prescriptions” by Max Efrein of The Daily Courier

o   The main point of the article is that because there is an increase in prescription drug overdoses and that task forces are taking steps that attempt to limit the frequency of this and inform patients through their pharmacy of the risks.

o   The problem in this article is that the purchase of illegal prescription pills is more dangerous than ever because of the increased potency of the drugs being dealt today. This creates a stress on the MATForce (a specialized task force to limit prescription drug overdoses). Another issue is the increase in deaths and health issues caused by the prescription medication overdoses.

o   The people who have the problem in this scenario is both the task force that deals with these issues, the pharmacy that have to create informational policy for customers, and the individuals illegally consuming the drugs that they are unaware are dangerously potent.

·        “Rays to City: Trop land isn’t for use” by Josh Solomon of the Tampa Bay Times

o   The main gist of the article is that The Tampa Bay Rays baseball team is refusing to allow the Tropicana Field Stadium to be used or developed even though they are searching for a new home without the mayor’s approval.

o   The problem in the article is that the baseball teams officials are continuing with their plan to split the season between St.Pete and Montreal in an effort to save the team, spurred by low fan attendance. They do this without the mayor’s approval however which caused deteriorated relations between the team and city hall since the summer.

o   The problem is mainly an issue for the city of St.Petersburg as the team is attempting to breech their contract with the city and also for the team as it seems that St.Pete officials are not in the position to cut them any slack.

·        “After gun violence, students call for action” by Kate Russell and Molly Duffy of The Gazette

o   The article is written to describe recent events for students at Cedar Rapids High School that has sparked students to demand a safer environment for their education.

o   The main problem in this context is that gun violence has increased dramatically, even within the last week as two harmful events occurred. The students went as far as staging a walkout because the conditions continued to intensify. With an armed robbery on campus and 2 men killed, the increase in crime for this high school is clearly a problem.

o   Obviously, the main group with the problem is the student body, who feel unsafe attending school every day. Faculty and staff of Cedar Rapids are also faced with the problem as they are employed in what could be considered an unsafe work environment. Finally, law enforcement could be facing the issue as they are essentially responsible for handling fun violence on school campuses, which typically is a difficult and dangerous call to respond to.

  1. Hey Jordan,
I found all your stories very interesting and I find that all of your explanations and descriptions of the stories are very thorough. One of your articles that I found most interesting was the one you wrote about the warnings against illegal prescriptions. I've heard that illegal prescription drugs like painkillers are a huge problem in America so it's no surprise to see it in a news article like that. In fact, the last three famous rappers that have died were from painkillers that weren't prescribed to them. I also really liked how you identified 3 unique groups of people who were affected. It shows you put quite some thought and time into your blog! Great job overall!

26A ·         This semester I did not necessarily fail a class or an exam but a goal I had set for myself. I had promised myself that I would not fall behind in my online classes and be scrambling for exams like I did last semester. By coming to ENT in person and watching my elective livestreamed I was mostly on top of it until my social schedule and sorority friends limited me from watching the 5 hours of economics lectures that were assigned every week. By the time spring break had finished I had over 30 hours of lectures that I needed to catch up on in 1 week for the upcoming exam. I feel like I had failed myself and fallen back into bad habits that led to my unsatisfactory grade last semester. ·         I learned that while a busy social schedule is fun and good for your happiness, choosing to put social or sorority life above your goals and the time required for your classes is never the correct ch...

14A- Halfway Reflection

14A- 1.       Tenacity is a competency:   In order to keep up with this course I have created an pre-deadline for myself to ensure all my assignments are completed before the due date and a high quality. Developing this habit has allowed me to manage my time more accurately and not turn in lackluster work. Because this class requires some outside of the library interaction, looking at assignments the week before they are due is now a behavior I have tried to implement this in the past few weeks when the assignments required interviews, which are not possible in the library at 2 am when you’re trying to beat a deadline. In order to be successful in ENT you must interact with other people and do so in a timely manner. 2.       Tenacity is also about attitude: When I was extremely a couple of weeks ago I put off all of my ENT homework because it is usually the last thing due for the week. By doing this however, I found myse...

29A 1.       Opportunity ·         New environmental protection movements have brought to light how environmentally damaging plastic is to our ecosystems, especially our oceans. The single use plastics are the greatest under fire because they are disposed of in great numbers and do not decompose, thus leaving trash to pollute the oceans and lands. ·         After a video emerged of a sea turtle having a straw stuck in its nostril, the push to stop the use of plastic straws was born. It began with the policy of not giving out straws unless asked, then to straw-less cups, and finally some cities have completely banned the distribution of plastic straws by restaurants and other straw serving establishments. With this came the implementation of paper straws in every restaurant, coffee shop, bar, and gas station. Paper straws were simply awful. They disintegrate in your drink and become l...
