1.
The showers in my dorm hall consistently have
hair on the walls and strange liquids pooled on the floor
a.
WHY it exists: Because of the communal nature of
the shower facilities, everyone on the floor uses the shower and there is no
commitment to keep it clean or sanitary.
2.
My random roommate makes our entire room smell
awful and keeps her side a complete mess.
a.
WHY it exists: My roommate is simply lazy and
inconsiderate of her effect on me as someone sharing a living space with her.
Leaving old food and dirty laundry causes both a smell and a mess that is
objectively bothersome.
3.
The on-campus Starbucks baristas consistently
make my simple drink order incorrectly and take more time than a standard
barista.
a.
WHY it exists: Because most of the on-campus
Starbucks employees are full time students, they aren’t as well trained or
experienced as compared to a barista at an off-campus Starbucks location.
4.
The #9 and #12 bus routes between the commuter
lot on Gale Lemerand Drive and the Rawlings Hall stop are often full during the
mid-morning.
a.
WHY it exists: Because both the 9 and 12 busses
run from several off-campus apartments to an academic center on campus, many
students choose this as their mode of transportation for getting to campus for
the day. This high traffic route causes the bus to commonly fill before
arriving closer to campus.
5.
People who ride elevators and hit all the
remaining levels as they exit at their destination floor.
a.
WHY it exists: Immature individuals when they
are in an empty elevator jokingly hit buttons causing the elevator to make
stops at unnecessary floors. This makes the elevator delayed and inefficient.
6.
People who wear one AirPod with music playing while
having conversations and during class show complete disrespect to those around
them.
a.
WHY it exists: The invention of these discreet,
yet expensive headphones have taken college campuses by storm. However, because
they are so discreet people feel like they can wear them in situations where
standard headphones wouldn’t be acceptable.
7.
When people cover the entire outlet with their large
laptop chargers making the using surrounding plugs impossible.
a.
WHY it exists: When MAC users are oblivious to
people around them, they commonly will just serve their own needs by plugging
in and not thinking about outlet access of others around them.
8.
When jewelry is taken out of a travel bag and
tangles on itself and is nearly impossible to un-knot.
a.
WHY it exists: This is caused by the shifting of
the jewelry chain during travel making it a complete tangled mess.
9.
Not being able to find a parking spot near
sorority row EVER
a.
WHY it exists: The construction and limited
spots near sorority houses combined with the large number of cars looking to
park near their sorority house causes an extreme shortage of spots to park in.
10.
When at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, the attendants
make you leave if you appear too intoxicated, even if you’re not sick and still
conscious.
a.
WHY it exists: Because intoxicated individuals
are a nuisance to the people in surrounding seats, stadium officials escort
them out in an effort to preserve an enjoyable environment for those around
them.
11.
When people approach me and ask if I am looking
for a church to join in Gainesville while I am simply trying to walk through
Turlington Plaza.
a.
WHY it exists: Students on campus who are
extremely devoted to their Christian mission find it necessary to promote their
church by approaching other students in busy areas.
12.
When the Chipotle location on University runs
out of lettuce by 12 pm.
a.
WHY it exists: Because the university chipotle
is so close to the North side of campus, students flock to the location between
classes and on the way to and from campus. This high popularity causes the
restaurant to run out of lettuce and other popular ingredients almost daily.
13.
When the copier runs out of paper but only displays
an error message and doesn’t say what is wrong, causing wasted time checking
every facet of the printer.
a.
WHY it exists: Because my printer is so old and
doesn’t have updated diagnostics it does not have the ability to say that there
is no paper left.
14.
When people wear mixed brands such as Nike shoes
with Adidas socks, etc. making their outfit look a bit like a mess.
a.
WHY it exists: Some people have no motivation to
have matching harmonious outfit and do not find it essential to pay attention
to the brands of their clothes.
15.
When someone drops their Hydro Flask water
bottle on a desk in the 3rd floor of the Marston Science Library.
a.
WHY it exists: Because Hydro Flask bottles are
the new rage for drinking containers they are nearly everywhere. When people
brush against them however, they can tip over and make an extremely loud noise
because of the metal material they are made of.
16.
When toilet paper gets tracked out of the
bathroom on the bottom of people’s shoes.
a.
WHY it exists: If toilet paper is moistened,
even by barely a drop, it starts to stick to anything it touches. So, in a
bathroom where water hits the floor toilet paper can commonly make its way out
the door.
17.
People who skip lines by walking up to join
someone they know that is close to the beginning.
a.
WHY it exists: Common at buffet lines, ticket
offices, and even theme parks people walk up to a line and will join someone
they know in order to not have to wait the full time.
18.
People who sing in the shower in communal
bathrooms
a.
WHY it exists: Before coming to college, the
shower was one of the only places you were truly alone at home where no one can
hear or interrupt you. Some people used this time to sing and now that they are
in a communal restroom, they continue the habit.
19.
PAPER STAWS! In any form ever, from anywhere,
and the way they disintegrate and limply fall over.
a.
WHY it exists: In order to reduce the use of
plastic, restaurants and drink establishments everywhere have opted to use
paper as a biodegradable alternative to the plastic straws.
20.
Highlighters that make a screeching sound when
being used.
a.
WHY it exists: When highlighters are fresh from
the package and not yet used, they make loud noises because they’re aren’t
broken in yet and still are tight and not softened.
Reflection:
When first looking at this assignment, my first impression was that the assignment would be very simple and easy. While this assignment did start out easy, I quickly ran out of things that bug me. Not necessarily things that can arise and bother me, but rather things that truly bug me repetitively. Reoccurring annoyances are apparently uncommon in my life. While less common, the ones that did instantly come to mind were difficult to find a “why” for. Thinking deeper into the issue and why it actually occurs was the most difficult portion of this assignment. Also, the sheer number of bugs that the assignment required was difficult to come up with.

I have never engaged in this type
of exercise and honestly it was refreshing and also helpful. Identifying what
bugs me allowed me to track my bad attitude toa specific time after one of
these bugs occurs. Thinking about why the bug occurs and what the causes are
lets me think about how to change my behavior and routine to avoid a majority
of “bugs”. While not solving the problem, I am still not likely to not
encounter them anymore. But I am aware this is not an Entrepreneur’s mindset.
In totality, I enjoyed the assignment even though my first instinct was not an
Entrepreneur’s reaction.
Hey Jordan! After reading through your bug list and reflection, the first thing I thought about was how much I related to your reflection. I too, expected this assignment to be a breeze. In reality, though, it was very difficult to think of more bugs after about the tenth. Aside from that, I really relate with almost all of your bugs. I for one happen to hate paper straws too and feel like they're a change in the right direction, but that it could be done better. Another thing that I can completely relate to in your list is when people go up to their friends in line to skip. It's one of the most frustrating things to experience when waiting in a line that is already long.

Hey Jordan,
ReplyDeleteI completely understand that the Chipotle on University gets really crowded. In addition to lettuce, they also run out of guacamole all the time. I really think that it should begin to carry more inventory because it is definitely busier than the typical franchise location. It also bugs when people cut lines because they see someone they know. I know this is something that upset many people when Gator football tickets used to be non-digital. I think this solution is easily fixed by hiring attendants to watch the line and make sure nobody cuts. Your bug list seems very relatable and I hope some solutions come your way.
