21A- Reading Reflection No. 2

Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Peter Drucker

1.      What was the general theme or argument of the book?

a.      The general message that Peter Drucker was trying to convey is that innovation and entrepreneurship are disciplines. They are categories of knowledge that must be learned. The whole book focuses on the behavior and decisions of entrepreneurs. I feel that this is a book stating that entrepreneurship can be taught, and anyone can learn.

2.      How did the book, in your opinion, connect and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?

a.      In the first part of the book, Drucker claims that entrepreneurs simply exploit changes in order to provide a new service or product. This lines up exactly with what we learned the first part of the semester when we identified bugs, problems, and changes. However, in addition to what we talked about in our class already, Drucker mentioned that it is good to start small and simple with innovation and grow from there. Essentially he is saying to not be too ambitious right away.

b.      Additionally, part 2 of his book was about managing and growing a new business. We discussed these aspects when we covered the sections on organizational culture and how to get people to want to work for you, a topic that has been covered in recent weeks.

c.      Drucker also mentions how it is important to find your niche in the market, just as we learned when we did the assessment of our target customer group and our customer avatar assignment.

3.      If you had to design an assignment for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?

a.      One of the biggest quotes of this book to me is, “Systematic innovation therefore consists in the purposeful and organized search for changes, and in the systematic analysis of the opportunities such changes might offer for economic or social innovation.”

b.      In response to this I would have an assignment split into two separate weekly posts. The first week I would have students find and explain in-depth 3-4 changes in the landscape, rules, or tendencies around their campus/town. The next week I would have them choose the change they want to exploit and write about 2-3 solutions or products/services that would be successful because of the recent change.

c.      This would show how large changes are to the entrepreneurship process.

4.      What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

a.      In this book I had a huge aha moment in relation to entrepreneurship. The first is when Drucker stated, “Entrepreneurship is “risky” mainly  because so few of the so-called entrepreneurs know what they are doing.” This was a surprise to me because it explained why we are doing our weekly exercises and what this class is really doing for me. I’m not simply learning about the entrepreneurship process, but rather how to be an Entrepreneur. I am learning all the necessary skills that entrepreneurs will need to be successful. By being in this class and “learning what I am doing” per say, I am diminishing the risk of entrepreneurship.

  1. Hey Jordan,

Based on your explanation of the book, I think that this work ties in perfectly with this class in that it literally follows the general process of entrepreneurship from problem identification all the way to formulating an actually growing a business that will solve or alleviate the issue at hand. Moreover, I like how you went above and beyond by including 3 points for each part of the question by breaking down the book into two parts. I thought it was really cool to see a lot of the stuff mentioned in class in your post about the book, I might pick it up one of these boring days!

  2. Hello Jordan,

I agree with you that entrepreneurship is something that can be learned through effort, patience, and commitment. I see from what you wrote for this assignment about the book Innovation and Entrepreneurship by Peter Drucker that at least in the beginning providing a minimum valuable product is something that is essential for entrepreneurs. Overall, I think that you did a great job providing a lot of valuable information why this book enhances what we are learning in this class.

    Sincerely,
    Javier Alfredo Felis Perez

26A ·         This semester I did not necessarily fail a class or an exam but a goal I had set for myself. I had promised myself that I would not fall behind in my online classes and be scrambling for exams like I did last semester. By coming to ENT in person and watching my elective livestreamed I was mostly on top of it until my social schedule and sorority friends limited me from watching the 5 hours of economics lectures that were assigned every week. By the time spring break had finished I had over 30 hours of lectures that I needed to catch up on in 1 week for the upcoming exam. I feel like I had failed myself and fallen back into bad habits that led to my unsatisfactory grade last semester. ·         I learned that while a busy social schedule is fun and good for your happiness, choosing to put social or sorority life above your goals and the time required for your classes is never the correct ch...

14A- Halfway Reflection

14A- 1.       Tenacity is a competency:   In order to keep up with this course I have created an pre-deadline for myself to ensure all my assignments are completed before the due date and a high quality. Developing this habit has allowed me to manage my time more accurately and not turn in lackluster work. Because this class requires some outside of the library interaction, looking at assignments the week before they are due is now a behavior I have tried to implement this in the past few weeks when the assignments required interviews, which are not possible in the library at 2 am when you’re trying to beat a deadline. In order to be successful in ENT you must interact with other people and do so in a timely manner. 2.       Tenacity is also about attitude: When I was extremely a couple of weeks ago I put off all of my ENT homework because it is usually the last thing due for the week. By doing this however, I found myse...

29A 1.       Opportunity ·         New environmental protection movements have brought to light how environmentally damaging plastic is to our ecosystems, especially our oceans. The single use plastics are the greatest under fire because they are disposed of in great numbers and do not decompose, thus leaving trash to pollute the oceans and lands. ·         After a video emerged of a sea turtle having a straw stuck in its nostril, the push to stop the use of plastic straws was born. It began with the policy of not giving out straws unless asked, then to straw-less cups, and finally some cities have completely banned the distribution of plastic straws by restaurants and other straw serving establishments. With this came the implementation of paper straws in every restaurant, coffee shop, bar, and gas station. Paper straws were simply awful. They disintegrate in your drink and become l...
